235,000 more people in work

There has been a jump in the number of people in work, with the overall jobless total also falling by 7,000 to 2.59 million in the quarter to July.

Public sector employment continued to fall, however, by 235,000 to 5.7 million.

The overall number of people in work increased by 236,000 to 29.6 million – the largest quarterly rise for two years, though to have been aided by the Olympics. London accounting for 91,000 of the rise.

The number of Jobseeker's Allowance claimants also fell by 15,000, to 1.57 million, which the ONS says is the biggest monthly fall since June 2010. 

Part-time work is at its highest level since records began, at 8.12 million – 1.42 million of whom are only doing it because they could not find a full-time job.
