Government funding up for grabs as Brokenshire opens up garden communities project
The communities secretary has called for a boost to garden towns across England in a new announcement for a garden communities project.
Under the plans released today, James Brokenshire claims the programme will lead to more high-quality homes built and an increase in green areas— with garden community projects taking the form of new villages, towns, or cities and having the potential to deliver 40,000 homes.
Local authorities and private developers who win council support will be able to apply for a place on the programme. The leading bidders will receive bespoke advice and potential funding for assistance with staff or environmental assessments; part of the planning process for new garden towns.
Brokenshire said: “This plan is about the government working with councils and developers to get great homes in keeping with beautiful areas in England.
“We want to help local authorities build strong and vibrant communities where people want to live, work, and raise families.”
There are already 23 locally-led garden communities already receiving funding support, with the total potential to deliver over 200,000 homes by 2050.
The announcement of the plans commences the beginning of a three-month application process, with successful garden community proposals being announced later in the New Year.
