Free for all?
A layer of authority and control between free schools and the DfE could be long overdue. Since 2010 there have bee over 3,444 schools taking on academy or free school status and moving beyond local government’s grasp.
Introducing a new level of regulation could ensure that provision of education at these thousands of schools is still maintained to a high standard, wherever you live.
But the very idea of free schools is that they are just that, free. How will new supervision affect their ability to innovate and improve services?
