Artificial intelligence has arrived - which way now?

Interested in artificial intelligence (AI) but confused about how to use it, or where to source the best technologies out there? Roderick Crawford, public sector director at SAS UK & Ireland, lends a helping hand.

This has been a year of headlines for AI innovation. From Theresa May’s address at Davos, to Pepper the robot giving evidence to the Commons Education Select Committee on robotics and the Fourth Industrial Revolution, AI has certainly made an impact.

So it is perfect timing that, as the year draws to a close, the government has announced its appointees to the world’s first Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. We at SAS look forward to hearing more about the centre’s forthcoming work in keeping the UK at the heart of the debate and progress surrounding AI.

However, if you are scoping the possible applications of AI and assessing the direction you’d like to take it within your organisation, please do visit our site: ‘Making AI Government-Smart.’ It contains a rich seam of intelligence on AI based on our strategic and practical work with government departments around the world and in the UK.

What will you find at Making AI Government-Smart?

  • Discussion papers: Demystifying AI to understanding what makes it so smart, and assessing its impact and value;
  • Action plans: Practical help from identifying ideal-use cases of AI, to managing data in the AI era, to ideas about how to overcome the cultural and ethical issues surrounding this technology;
  • Videos and podcasts: Our AI leaders tap into their real-world experience to illustrate just how AI can transform service delivery, financial efficiency, and citizen outcomes;
  • Stories from the frontline: Many of our resources, including the excellent white paper ‘Analytics for Government: Better decisions, smarter policies at less cost and risk,’ include case studies about the transformational effect of advanced analytics and AI on UK government departments.

AI can and will be a powerful force for good in terms of improving how government operates, predicts service demand, connects with citizens, supports economic growth, protects natural environments, and allocates precious resources to citizens who require them the most.

And this is just the beginning. SAS can help you surface the value of AI rapidly and effectively, while mitigating risk and helping you to navigate the complexities of ethics and internal cultural shift.

Why? Because we have been developing AI techniques, specifically in the field of machine learning, for more than 40 years, and we are happy to share our insights and practical experience with you.
